８世紀の宗像氏は、一族の長が宗像神主と神郡である宗像郡の大領とを兼帯した氏族（ウヂ）である。すなわち、宗像三女神の奉斎氏族として、また郡領氏族として王権に奉仕したウヂといえる。５世紀後半には、沖ノ島祭祀に中心的に関わる集団が津屋崎古墳群の造営集団に固定化していったと推定される。この段階を、実質的宗像氏の成立とみることはできるが、「ムナカタ」のウヂ名と「君」のカバネが賜与されたのは「磐井の乱」後のことと考えられる。 |
