| Description |
Traditional practice of fishermen When a new boat is built, it is customary to take it to the waters off Nakatsu-miya and maneuver it in three counterclockwise circles.
Dedication The people of Oshima are proud proponents of the Munakata faith and are involved in the upkeep of the shrines, which includes making the sacred shimenawa entwined rope that hangs at shrine precincts.
Gratitude for blessing On the first and fifteenth of every month, fishermen offer part of their catch at Nakatsu-miya, praying for safety and good fortune.
Closest Place to Okinoshima Island Okinoshima is sacred and off-limits to the public. As Oshima is the guardian island of Okinoshima, the roles of the two islands are intertwined. For the people of Oshima, Okinoshima remains ever-present in their hearts. |
